vegetables

All of our vegetable, herb and flower crops are started from seed here on the farm in our greenhouse beginning in early March. Since we rely on several successions of most crops to see us through the season, we continue seeding through September in order to have steady and continuous harvests through January. Beginning in March, you'll see us out in the fields direct seeding and transplanting these starts into our unheated field tunnels.

Our tunnels (we use both high tunnels and caterpillar tunnels) are an important aspect of how we grow produce in our Northern Mid-West climate. In the late winter, they provide a spring-like environment, allowing us to plant early when the ground outside is still frozen and snow covered. In the fall and early winter, they provide a climactically moderate environment (using just passive solar heat), keeping the soil from freezing and taking the edge off the cold temperatures - allowing us an extended harvest window for our cold hardy varietals, crops like kale, spinach, chard, scallions, carrots and radishes! And finally, in the summer our tunnels act as a concentrated heat source and water-controlled environment, as well as providing the trellising structure for our more heat-loving, sensitive fruiting crops, like cucumbers and heirloom tomatoes. Currently, our production season runs March-January.

The majority of our produce is sold direct-to-consumer through our three season, on-farm CSA, the Midland Farmer's Market, and our on-line farm store which includes our pick up and home delivery system.
